A game room can photograph well and still be uncomfortable to play in. Our recommendation is to test ball visibility, shadows and cue movement before choosing a decorative light or dark cloth. If the room is mainly for occasional social games, the balance can be different from a club built for long playing sessions.
The room discussion behind this guide
An August 2026 Reddit table-room post drew conflicting reactions: some liked the appearance, while others questioned the shadows, dark cloth and clearance. A separate basement-lighting question described a low ceiling and a beam over one corner. Neither thread proves that a particular color or fixture is always wrong. Together they make a useful buying question: will this combination work for the people who actually play here?
Check coverage, not just the fixture’s appearance
The WPA’s published equipment specifications use at least 520 lux across the bed and rails as a competition reference and advise avoiding noticeably brighter light in the center than at the corners. The document concerns WPA events and says it does not necessarily apply to commercial home-use tables. For your room, ask the lighting supplier for coverage at the planned mounting height. Test the center, rails and corners with a light meter rather than treating bulb wattage as a measurement of light on the table.
Try the cloth color under the planned light
Place your actual ball set on a cloth sample under the proposed fixture. Look from both ends, then bend into a shooting stance and check whether glare or a shadow makes a ball edge difficult to see. We would start with a mid-tone blue or green sample for a room focused on play, but that is a purchasing preference, not a universal rule. Compare a darker sample if it suits the design. Photos, screens and showroom lighting cannot settle the decision for your room.
Low ceilings need a measured plan
Measure from the floor to the lowest beam, fan, fixture or other obstruction, not just to the main ceiling. Send those dimensions, the table’s playing-surface height and a room sketch to the installer. Check sightlines and cue clearance near rails and walls, and allow access for maintaining the light. Follow the fixture manufacturer’s mounting instructions and use a qualified installer for electrical work; a lighting suggestion in a forum is not an installation specification.
Keep room layout and table selection connected
Mark the table position on the floor and test the intended cue length around all sides, including corners near furniture. Reserve space for spectators, seating and walkways rather than filling every gap with a larger table. When requesting an SQF project quotation, send the usable room size, obstacles, preferred table count, cloth sample requirements and lighting questions together. Confirm the actual model dimensions and available cloth options before approval.
| Check | How to make the decision |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Measure the bed, rails and corners at the proposed mounting height |
| Color and glare | Compare cloth samples with the ball set from a shooting stance |
| Ceiling | Record the lowest beam, fan or obstruction and the fixture clearance |
| Room layout | Test cue movement, furniture positions and circulation space |
Common Questions
Is black pool table cloth a bad choice?
It is not automatically a bad choice, but test ball visibility and shadows under your actual lighting before ordering. Room style, eyesight and intended use affect the decision.
How bright should a pool table light be?
The WPA specifications give 520 lux across the bed and rails as a competition reference. Home and recreational rooms should be assessed for their own use, fixture coverage, glare and comfort; wattage alone does not tell you the illumination on the table.
Can a pool table fit under a low basement ceiling?
It depends on the table height, lowest obstruction, fixture design and installation instructions. Give the installer a measured room sketch before buying the light or table.
