Buying a Used Pool Table: Moving Costs and Inspection Checklist

Compare a used pool table by its installed cost: inspection, professional moving, cloth, cushions, delivery access and setup, not the asking price alone.

A cheap used pool table can be a good purchase, but only after you know what it will cost to play on it in your room. Our recommendation is to get a table mechanic’s written moving and installation quote before agreeing a price with the seller. If the condition or access route cannot be inspected, keep that uncertainty in your budget.

Why the asking price can be misleading

An October 2026 Reddit question about an offer on a first table, and an August discussion about finding a home table, both raised the practical work around the purchase. These are useful questions rather than a price survey. A seller’s table price may exclude dismantling, transport, unloading, replacement cloth and leveling. Request those items separately, then compare the installed total with a new-table quote using the same delivery and setup assumptions.

Inspect the table before it is dismantled

Ask for the model label, bed material, slate-piece count if applicable, and clear photos of the playing surface, rail joints, pockets, cabinet and underside. Arrange an in-person inspection when possible. Look for visible slate damage, cloth wear, loose parts and evidence of moisture in the frame. Have the mechanic assess cushion condition and any repairs; a slow ball or an uneven roll alone does not identify the cause. A cosmetic scratch and a structural fault deserve different decisions.

Quote the whole delivery route

Send the mover photos and measurements of doors, stairs, elevators, corners and the final room at both properties. State whether the table is upstairs or in a basement. Brunswick’s official care guidance recommends experienced professionals for moving billiard tables because of the weight and risk of damage or injury. Do not use an online weight estimate as a lifting plan. Confirm who dismantles, protects, carries, reassembles and levels this particular table, and what happens if parts are missing.

Make the condition and scope part of the agreement

List the included accessories and replacement work in writing. Ask whether existing cloth can be reused, whether the quote includes new cloth, and whether cushion or pocket work changes the price. Obtain the mover’s damage and service terms before booking. Local quotes matter more than a bargain someone reported in another country. For an SQF comparison, provide the room dimensions, desired table size and delivery destination; model availability, freight and installation responsibilities must be confirmed in the quotation or PI.

Common Questions

Is a free used pool table really free?

Only the purchase price may be zero. Inspection, dismantling, moving, repairs and installation can still cost money. Get a written quote for the full job before accepting it.

How much does moving a slate pool table cost?

There is no single reliable price for every location or model. Distance, slate construction, access, labor and replacement work affect the quote. Send a local table mechanic the model details and photos of both access routes.

Can I move an assembled slate table myself?

Do not assume an assembled slate table is safe to lift or roll. Brunswick recommends experienced professionals for table moving. Have a mechanic plan the dismantling and handling for the specific model.

When is a new table the better comparison?

Compare a new table when the used table’s condition is uncertain, required parts are unavailable, or moving and restoration make its installed cost unattractive. Compare equivalent specifications and written delivery terms.
